No Surprises Act

What is a “Good Faith Estimate”?

Healthcare providers must provide an estimated bill for services to patients without specific types of coverage before those services are provided, as required by federal law.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the total expected cost of any healthcare items or services upon request or when scheduling.

If you schedule a healthcare service at least 3 business days in advance, your provider must give you a Good Faith Estimate within 1 business day. For services scheduled at least 10 business days in advance, the estimate must be provided within 3 business days. You can also request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling, and it must be provided within 3 business days of your request.

If your bill exceeds the Good Faith Estimate by $400 or more, you can dispute it.

Save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate and the bill.
